London Bridge
You cannot think about London without thinking of London Bridge or Westminster Abbey. It is the major bridge over the River Thames. This bridge is maintained by the city Bridge trust.
London Bridge has a long and interesting history. There was a bridge existing upon this exact site 2000 years ago and which the Romans had built as a pontoon bridge, so that their soldiers would move back and forth across the Thames.
There is a nursery rhyme, which says, "London Bridge is falling down falling down, falling down, my fair Lady" and it has done exactly that a number of times during its existence. During Roman times, the city of Londinium was based around this bridge, but Queen Boudicea destroyed it in 60 AD. Nevertheless, after her defeat, the Romans built this bridge again as well as a city, which is now known as London.
The rhyme London Bridge is falling down is based upon the number of bridges, which were built at this location, and upon the shops were made so that plenty of trading in silver and Gold was done up on them.
In the year 1173, the timber bridge was built in stone. King John gave the permission to build shops on London Bridge, so that trading could be done in silver and gold, and just one pedestrian alcove remains of the old London Bridge, today, because since then, it has been modified many times, and into the amazing tourist attraction we see now.
